Introduction

Venus, Jupiter and Sirius are among the least exotic but most persistent causes of UFO reports in Hesse. They matter because Hesse is home to CENAP, the long-running private UFO reporting centre in Lützelbach in the Odenwald, and its recent case summaries show a repeated pattern: many sincere witnesses are not inventing what they saw, but are misreading a bright, low, unfamiliar point of light in the sky. In 2023, CENAP-linked reporting counted 164 Venus reports, 83 Jupiter reports and 31 Sirius reports among 807 total sightings, putting these ordinary celestial objects near the top of the year’s “UFO” explanations.[Merkur]merkur.de807 Ufo-Meldungen im vergangenen Jahr16 Jan 2024 — Insgesamt wurde 164 Mal der Planet Venus gemeldet, 83 Mal der Jupiter und 31 Mal…Overview image for Bright Planets The lesson for Hesse’s UFO history is simple but important. A light can be genuinely startling, photographed, reported by several people and still be a planet or bright star. Low altitude above the horizon, twilight, haze, car travel, poor distance cues and the brain’s tendency to see motion in isolated lights can turn familiar astronomy into a convincing false alarm. That is why bright planets remain central to modern sighting work, even in an era when Starlink satellites, drones and phone-camera artefacts receive more public attention.[hessenschau.de]hessenschau.deRekordzahl an Ufo-Sichtungen in Deutschland eingeschicktJanuary 10, 2025 — 10 Jan 2025 — Im vergangenen Jahr sorgten nach Angaben des CENAP-Leiters die auffällige Konstellation leuchtstarker Pl…Published: January 10, 2025

Why Venus still causes UFO reports in Hesse

Venus is the classic false alarm because it can look too bright to be a normal star and too steady to be an aircraft. NASA describes Venus as the third-brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon, and its Night Sky Network guidance notes that bright, low Venus has often been reported as a UFO. The same guidance names Sirius and Jupiter as other frequent sources of mistaken UFO reports, especially when bright planets appear near the horizon in a way that looks like a formation of “strange lights”.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience Venus: FactsScience Venus: Facts

That general astronomy point has a direct Hesse connection because CENAP’s public case pattern repeatedly includes these exact objects. Hessischer Rundfunk reported that CENAP, based in southern Hesse, received 1,084 UFO reports in 2024 from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with many sightings linked to Starlink satellites but also to conspicuous arrangements of Venus, Jupiter and bright stars such as Sirius. The same report said CENAP’s usual annual level had been about 600 to 800 reports, showing how a busier sky and easier phone reporting can increase the number of “UFO” alarms without increasing the number of strong mystery cases.[hessenschau.de]hessenschau.deRekordzahl an Ufo-Sichtungen in Deutschland eingeschicktJanuary 10, 2025 — 10 Jan 2025 — Im vergangenen Jahr sorgten nach Angaben des CENAP-Leiters die auffällige Konstellation leuchtstarker Pl…Published: January 10, 2025

The 2023 figures show why planets deserve their own page rather than being treated as a minor footnote. According to CENAP data reported by Merkur and HNA, Starlink generated 176 reports in 2023, but Venus alone generated 164, Jupiter 83 and Sirius 31. Taken together, Venus, Jupiter and Sirius accounted for roughly 278 reports, more than Starlink for that year.[Merkur]merkur.de807 Ufo-Meldungen im vergangenen Jahr16 Jan 2024 — Insgesamt wurde 164 Mal der Planet Venus gemeldet, 83 Mal der Jupiter und 31 Mal…

For a witness in Hesse, the setting can make this even more persuasive. Much of the state combines urban light pollution, airport traffic, hills, forests and villages with partial horizons. A bright planet seen through gaps in trees, over the Taunus, beyond the Odenwald, above the Rhine-Main skyline or from a moving car can feel local and low, even though it is astronomically distant. The witness is often describing a real light accurately; the mistake lies in judging its distance, size and movement.Bright Planets illustration 1

What bright planets look like near the horizon

A bright planet near the horizon does not behave in the way many people expect a planet to behave. Instead of looking like a calm textbook dot high in the sky, it can appear large, glaring, coloured, flickering or oddly placed. The lower it is, the more atmosphere its light passes through, which can make it shimmer or change colour. Sirius is especially well known for attracting attention because it can appear to flash or sparkle strongly when low, while Jupiter and Venus can look unnaturally bright in twilight. CENAP’s 2023 summary specifically noted that Venus was conspicuous in the evening sky and later very bright in the morning sky, while Jupiter was again prominent in the evening later in the year.[Merkur]merkur.de807 Ufo-Meldungen im vergangenen Jahr16 Jan 2024 — Insgesamt wurde 164 Mal der Planet Venus gemeldet, 83 Mal der Jupiter und 31 Mal…

This is where many sincere Hesse reports begin. A person sees a bright object shortly after sunset or before dawn, when the rest of the sky is not fully dark. Because only the brightest objects survive the twilight glow, the scene can feel abnormal: one or two “lights” remain visible when ordinary stars have faded. In August 2025, CENAP reported a surge of enquiries about two unusual morning lights that some observers described as “drone twins” or “headlights in the sky”. ZDF reported CENAP’s explanation: the objects were Jupiter and Venus appearing close together from Earth, bright enough to remain visible in morning twilight. The report said many of the enquiries came from Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg.[ZDFheute]zdfheute.deUngewöhnliche Lichter am Himmel sind keine UfosUngewöhnliche Lichter am Himmel sind keine Ufos

The same event illustrates a recurring problem in UFO interpretation. A conjunction, where two planets appear close together in the sky, can look more artificial than a single light. Two bright points may suggest a craft, a pair of drones, lights on a structure, or a distant vehicle, especially when the observer lacks a clear horizon reference. Spektrum also covered the August 2025 Jupiter-Venus pairing, noting that the two planets were visible close together in the eastern morning sky and that the unfamiliar sight had already triggered UFO reports to CENAP.[Spektrum]spektrum.deMorgenhimmel: Jupiter und Venus lösen UFO-MeldungenMorgenhimmel: Jupiter und Venus lösen UFO-Meldungen

For Hesse’s UFO record, these cases are useful because they are not vague dismissals. They show a repeatable mechanism: a known sky event, a burst of reports, similar witness descriptions, and a quick astronomical explanation. That is very different from simply saying “people saw a star”. The false alarm has a shape, a time window and a reason.

Why stationary lights can seem to move

One of the most common objections to a planet explanation is also one of the most understandable: “It moved.” A witness may watch Venus, Jupiter or Sirius and honestly perceive drifting, hovering, pulsing, dipping or following movement. Some of this can come from real observer movement. If someone is in a car, walking along a street, looking through branches, or comparing the light with passing clouds, the point of light can seem to shift against the local foreground.

There is also a recognised visual illusion at work. The autokinetic effect occurs when a stationary point of light in a dark or featureless setting appears to move because the eye and brain lack stable reference points. Aviation safety source SKYbrary describes it as a phenomenon in which a small stationary light in darkness appears to move, because motion perception depends on external references and those references may be missing in a dark sky.[Skybrary]skybrary.aeroOpen source on skybrary.aero.

This matters for UFO reports because a bright planet can provide exactly the wrong kind of visual target: a single intense point against a dark or twilight background. If the viewer stares at it, the light may appear to wobble or drift. If there is haze, thin cloud, a window reflection or slight hand movement while filming, the impression can become stronger. The witness is not necessarily lying or exaggerating; the visual system is doing what it does under poor reference conditions.

The effect is especially relevant in rural or edge-of-town parts of Hesse. A person standing in a dark garden, on a village road, near fields, or on a wooded slope may have fewer fixed visual cues than someone in a well-lit square. A very bright light just above the horizon can therefore feel like it is hovering over a nearby hill or moving slowly above a roofline. The more attention the witness gives it, the more meaningful the apparent motion may seem.

Phone videos can then add a second layer of confusion. Autofocus hunting, digital zoom, hand tremor, lens flare and low-light noise can make a point source bloom, pulse or jump. CENAP-linked reporting has repeatedly noted that many submitted photos and videos contain ordinary causes such as lens reflections or blurred nearby insects and birds, alongside satellites, aircraft, balloons, drones, meteors and planets.[Handelsblatt]handelsblatt.comRekordzahl von UFO-Sichtungen bei MeldestelleRekordzahl von UFO-Sichtungen bei MeldestelleBright Planets illustration 2

How sky charts resolve many reports

The strongest planet explanations are not guesses. They are checks against time, location and direction. A report that says “a bright light was low in the west at 19:10 from near Darmstadt” can be compared with a sky chart for that location and moment. If Venus was low in the west, extremely bright, and setting at the same time, the case becomes much less mysterious. If Jupiter was in the right part of the sky, or Sirius was low and scintillating, the same logic applies.

This is why the best first questions in a Hesse bright-light report are practical rather than dramatic:

 • What exact date and time was it seen?
 • Where was the observer standing?
 • Which direction was the light?
 • Was it rising, setting, or staying in roughly the same place?
 • Were there buildings, hills, clouds, trees or a car window in the line of sight?
 • Did the witness check a sky-chart app before or after reporting it?

NASA’s Night Sky Network gives the same broad identification advice for public observers: record the time, direction and appearance, then compare the sighting with common astronomical and human-made sources. It specifically warns that Venus, Sirius, Jupiter and Mercury are often mistaken for UFOs, and that bright objects near the horizon can look like strange formations.[Night Sky Network]nightsky.jpl.nasa.govNight Sky NetworkIdentifying UFOs and UAPs1 Dec 2013 — Venus shining bright and low has been reported many times as a UFO. Do you think y…

CENAP’s role in Hesse is important here because it functions as a long-term sorting point for exactly these reports. Hessischer Rundfunk described CENAP as a private organisation in Lützelbach that receives sighting details and compares them with known explanations such as astronomical objects, satellite and International Space Station passes, rocket debris, aircraft and helicopters.[hessenschau.de]hessenschau.deRekordzahl an Ufo-Sichtungen in Deutschland eingeschicktJanuary 10, 2025 — 10 Jan 2025 — Im vergangenen Jahr sorgten nach Angaben des CENAP-Leiters die auffällige Konstellation leuchtstarker Pl…Published: January 10, 2025

A sky chart does not prove that every report is Venus. It narrows the claim. If the alleged object was far from any bright planet or star, moved rapidly across a large part of the sky, changed direction independently, appeared on radar, or was observed by trained witnesses with good reference points, a planet explanation may weaken. But many classic false alarms never reach that stage. Once the time, direction and altitude are checked, the “unknown craft” becomes a known celestial object.

What makes Hesse’s planet false alarms historically useful

Bright-planet reports may sound mundane, but they are valuable in a state-level UFO history because they show how a modern sighting pipeline works. Hesse does not need a single spectacular unsolved incident for its UFO record to matter. Its importance comes partly from repeated, documented sorting: reports arrive, natural and technical causes are tested, and the public sees how quickly mystery can shrink when basic context is added.

The 2023 and 2024 reporting also shows that false alarms evolve with the sky culture of the moment. Starlink dominated many public discussions after 2019, and Hessischer Rundfunk reported it as a major driver of 2024’s record sightings. Yet the older explanations did not disappear. Venus, Jupiter and Sirius continued to generate reports alongside newer causes such as drones, satellite chains, LED balloons and event lighting.[hessenschau.de]hessenschau.deRekordzahl an Ufo-Sichtungen in Deutschland eingeschicktJanuary 10, 2025 — 10 Jan 2025 — Im vergangenen Jahr sorgten nach Angaben des CENAP-Leiters die auffällige Konstellation leuchtstarker Pl…Published: January 10, 2025

That continuity is the point. Hesse’s “classic false alarms” are not relics from the flying-saucer era. They remain active because the conditions that produce them are still common: people look up unexpectedly, the sky is partly obscured, bright objects appear in twilight, and a phone camera turns a small light into a dramatic blob. A modern witness may be more likely to think “drone” than “flying saucer”, but the underlying misidentification can be the same.

The August 2025 Jupiter-Venus reports are a good example of this modernised language. Observers reportedly used descriptions such as drone-like twins and sky headlights, not old-fashioned saucers. CENAP’s explanation was nevertheless astronomical: two bright planets, close together, visible in the morning sky.[ZDFheute]zdfheute.deUngewöhnliche Lichter am Himmel sind keine UfosUngewöhnliche Lichter am Himmel sind keine UfosBright Planets illustration 3

How to read a Hesse bright-light case fairly

A fair reading of a Hesse bright-light report avoids two mistakes. The first is to treat every witness as gullible. The second is to treat every vivid description as evidence of an extraordinary object. Planet false alarms sit between those extremes. They are often sincere, memorable and emotionally convincing, but they are also among the easiest UFO reports to test.

A strong planet explanation usually has several features. The sighting occurred near dawn or dusk. The object was very bright, steady or slowly changing. It stayed in one part of the sky for minutes. It was seen low over a horizon, hill, skyline or tree line. The reported direction matches Venus, Jupiter or Sirius for that time and place. Other witnesses in nearby regions reported the same thing. CENAP’s 2025 Jupiter-Venus warning fits that pattern closely: a short-lived burst of public concern, repeated similar descriptions, and a simple planetary cause.[ZDFheute]zdfheute.deUngewöhnliche Lichter am Himmel sind keine UfosUngewöhnliche Lichter am Himmel sind keine Ufos

A weaker planet explanation would be one where the direction is unknown, the time is approximate, the witness changed position, or the report arrived days later without a clear image. In those cases, “probably Venus” may be plausible but not proven. Evidence-led UFO writing should preserve that distinction. Some reports are identified; some are probably explained; some remain too poorly documented to classify.

For Hesse, the broader conclusion is not that bright planets make UFO study pointless. It is that they set a baseline. Before a report can become a serious anomaly, it must survive the ordinary sky: Venus near the horizon, Jupiter in twilight, Sirius flashing low, satellites crossing, aircraft approaching Frankfurt, drones nearby, meteors burning up, and camera artefacts in low light. Many reports do not survive that first pass, and that is precisely why the pass matters.

The lasting lesson of the “Venus UFO”

Venus still gets reported as a UFO because it appears in the exact visual niche where human judgement is weakest: bright, low, isolated, sometimes seen through haze or twilight, and difficult to judge for distance. Jupiter and Sirius add their own variants, especially when they are unusually prominent or appear close to another bright object. Hesse’s CENAP-linked record gives this old explanation a local importance because the state is not just a place where such reports occur; it is also where many of them are collected, compared and publicly explained.

The result is a quieter but more useful kind of UFO history. Instead of treating every light as a mystery or every explanation as a dismissal, the Hesse pattern shows how identification works in practice. A witness sees something strange. The report is checked against the sky. Sometimes the answer is a satellite, aircraft, balloon, meteor or camera artefact. Very often, especially in the classic false-alarm category, it is simply Venus, Jupiter or Sirius doing what bright objects have always done: standing out in the sky strongly enough to feel unfamiliar.

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to Why Venus Still Gets Reported as a UFO.
