Introduction
The Greifswald lights of 24 August 1990 are useful because they show both the strength and the weakness of UFO video. The footage and photographs helped confirm that witnesses around the Greifswald Bodden really did see bright, unusual lights in the evening sky; this was not just a rumour or a single person’s memory. Yet the same recordings did not settle the harder questions: how far away the lights were, how large they were, whether they were moving under their own power, and what produced them. That gap is why the case remains central to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s UFO history. It is one of Germany’s best-known recorded sky events, but later sceptical work argued that the most plausible explanation was military parachute illumination flares rather than exotic craft.[GWUP e. What video can prove
In the Greifswald case, video mattered because it moved the story beyond a purely verbal sighting report. Contemporary and later accounts describe multiple recordings and photographs, with MUFON-CES saying its photo-analysis team received six videos, while other circulated summaries describe four amateur videos from different vantage points. Even allowing for inconsistencies in later retellings, the important point is clear: several people captured similar lights, not a single blurred dot from one camera.[MUFON CES Archive]archiv.mufon-ces.orgMUFON CES Archive The Greifswald Lights MUFON-CES: The Greifswald LightsMUFON CES ArchiveThe Greifswald LightsMUFON-CES: The Greifswald Lights - example for a Class B UFO report, by Illobrand von Ludwiger…
That gives the case a stronger starting point than many UFO reports. A recording can show that a luminous display existed at a certain time, in a certain part of the sky, and that it had a recognisable pattern. In Greifswald, the footage supported the basic witness claim that clusters of bright, roundish lights appeared over the Baltic area near the Greifswald Bodden on 24 August 1990 and were visible for an extended period. GWUP’s sceptical account, while rejecting the extraordinary interpretation, still treats the event as a real observed phenomenon that became internationally known as the “Greifswald UFOs”.[GWUP e. V.]gwup.orge. V.Das UFO-Phänomen von GreifswaldGWUP e. V.Das UFO-Phänomen von Greifswald - Ein deutscher Klassiker | Pseudo- und Parawissenschaften | GWUP e. V…
Video also helps investigators compare testimony. If one witness remembers a formation as a solid object, but the footage shows separated lights changing slowly in brightness and position, the film can restrain the claim. If the lights fade, drift or descend in a way consistent with flares, that too becomes visible evidence. This is why the Greifswald recordings are valuable even for sceptics: they preserve the visual behaviour that later explanations must account for.
But video’s strength is also narrow. It can prove that something was recorded; it does not automatically prove what the object was. A luminous point in the sky is not self-explanatory. Without reliable distance, camera metadata, lens information, direction, elevation angle, weather data and matching records of aircraft or military activity, a video can remain impressive while still being underdetermined.
Why distance and scale stay uncertain
The central trap in UFO video is that the camera records angle, not distance. A small nearby object and a large distant object can occupy the same amount of space in the frame. A slow object filmed at long range can look stationary; a drifting light seen without landmarks can appear to hover; and a row of separate lights can be interpreted as one structured object if the viewer mentally connects them.
Greifswald is a textbook example of that problem. The lights were filmed against the sky, not passing in front of measured reference points. The footage could show brightness, relative position and change over time, but it could not by itself establish the lights’ range over the Baltic. Once range is uncertain, almost everything else becomes uncertain too: size, speed, altitude and even whether the apparent formation is a single object or separate light sources.
The Greifswald footage and the flare explanation
The later sceptical reinterpretation of Greifswald turned on a simple idea: the lights looked strange to civilians, but their behaviour could fit parachute illumination flares used in military exercises. Such flares can burn brightly, hang or descend slowly under parachutes, appear in clusters, drift with wind, and fade in ways that look deliberate to a viewer who does not recognise the mechanism.
This explanation also fits Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s setting. The Greifswald Bodden lies in a coastal region where sea, sky, military activity and civilian observation overlap. A display over water or a training area can be visible to many people across a wide area, while still leaving witnesses unsure of distance and scale. KATAPULT MV notes that television stations broadcast the material over the following years and that the Greifswald lights were presented at the time as among Germany’s best-documented UFO cases; it also points to later sceptical attention from Werner Walter of GWUP.[KATAPULT MV]katapult-mv.deKATAPULT MVE.T. in MV | KATAPULT MVKATAPULT MVE.T. in MV | KATAPULT MV
The flare reading does not require dismissing the witnesses as foolish. It asks a narrower question: does the video show anything that flares could not do? The strongest sceptical answer is that the visible behaviour — bright points, grouped appearance, slow change, long visibility and fading — is compatible with illumination flares. GWUP’s long treatment of the case presents Greifswald as a German UFO classic precisely because it became a durable “proof” case before later investigation weakened the extraordinary claim.[GWUP e. V.]gwup.orge. V.Das UFO-Phänomen von GreifswaldGWUP e. V.Das UFO-Phänomen von Greifswald - Ein deutscher Klassiker | Pseudo- und Parawissenschaften | GWUP e. V…
That is why Greifswald is more valuable as a lesson in interpretation than as a mystery trophy. The videos did not vanish; they were repeatedly circulated. The witnesses were not simply ignored. Yet the more the event was compared with plausible military lighting, the less the footage supported the idea of unknown craft.
What the camera could not tell viewers
A viewer watching the Greifswald recordings may feel that the lights are “obviously” large, distant or organised. That impression is understandable, but it is not the same as measurement. Several missing pieces prevent the footage from settling the case on its own:
Range: without triangulation from known camera positions and exact lines of sight, the distance to the lights remains uncertain.
Altitude: a light over the sea can look high, low, close or far depending on haze, horizon visibility and the viewer’s expectations.
Object count: a cluster of independent flares can be perceived as a single formation, especially when the lights appear in a rough line or group.
Motion: slow drift, descent or fading can look like hovering, manoeuvring or controlled departure when there are few reference points.
Source: the camera records light reaching the lens, not the mechanism producing it. A flare, aircraft light, balloon, drone, reflection or distant firework can all begin as “a light in the sky”.
Why Greifswald still matters
Greifswald remains important because it sits between two extremes. It is not a flimsy story with no evidence: there were witnesses, recordings and sustained media attention. But it is also not a settled demonstration of extraordinary technology. Its value lies in showing how a well-recorded UFO case can still be vulnerable to ordinary uncertainties.
For Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s UFO history, that makes the case unusually instructive. The state’s most famous modern UFO event is not best understood as “video proves aliens” or “video proves nothing”. It shows that video can establish the reality of a sighting while failing to establish identity. The camera can make a case harder to dismiss, but it can also preserve the very clues that later make a mundane explanation more convincing.
The Greifswald lights therefore belong in the evidence column and the caution column at the same time. They remind readers that “unidentified on video” is a starting point, not a conclusion. In this case, the recordings helped make the event famous; later analysis made the extraordinary interpretation weaker. That tension is exactly why the case remains a useful benchmark for judging UFO videos from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and beyond.

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to Why UFO Videos Do Not Settle Everything.
